I spent my summer at the Riviera, travelling between Italy and France. And Saint-Paul de Vence is a must visit for an art lover like me. One of the oldest medieval cities in Provence, it’s also the most vibrant, artistic and contemporary in its spirit, bursting with museums and small galleries giving you endless inspiration.

My goal was to see with my own eyes the famous Fondation Maeght, an iconic contemporary art foundation established in 1964. This place is a unique sight. It was the first private art foundation in Europe, built by well’known Catalan architect Josep Lluís Sert, with a garden designed by Joan Miró and full of his sculptures – both artists were close friends of the founders, Aimé and Marguerite Maeght.

The collection of Fondation Maeght is incredible. Here you can find crème de la crème of XX century art (there’re more than 13 000 works in the Foundation). Among them Georges Braque, Alberto and Diego Giacometti, Alexander Calder, Fernand Léger, Marc Chagall, Wassily Kandinsky, Christo and many others.

And this contemporary art installation was my favourite for the photos by Saverio Chiappalone. Indeed, ‘Pénétrable Jaune’ by kinetic artist Jesús Rafael Soto from 1992 is picture perfect. The same works in different shades by this artist are represented in the collection of Fondation Louis Vuitton in Paris, and were exhibited at Miami Art Basel in 2017 and at Centre Pompidou in Metz.

Fondation Maeght is a great place to visit with children – not only because of the amazing sculpture garden by Joan Miró with which the little ones would fall in love straight away, but also because the Foundation organises artistic tours for children, building their understanding of art from early age.

I was amazed to discover the whole artistic family of the Giacomettis: there was a temporary exhibition dedicated to their works. Alberto Giacometti was the most famous with his sculptures represented at the most important museums around the world and with price tags of millions at art auctions, but also his father and brother were very well-known painters. Definitely, art is a family affair!

If you’re visiting Saint-Paul-de-Vence, make sure to check La Colombe d’Or, as it’s a local sight. This hotel and restaurant was opened in 1920 by a local farmer, and in late in the war years of 1940s many painters from all Europe were staying here, paying the bed with their artworks – like, Picasso and Matisse among them. Now these paintings form the extraordinary collection of La Colombe which is frequented by socialites, influencers and other famous people from all over the world. If you’re not staying at the hotel, book a lunch in the restaurant with its unique setting.
