Vincent Peters: TIMELESS TIME Exhibition

A collection of 89 black-and-white works in which light is used to define emotions and tell the stories of the subjects depicted presented in Palazzo Reale, Milan to Feb. 26, 2023.

89 культовых черно-белых работ, в которых свет показывает эмоции и рассказывает истории, будут представлены на выставке мирового художника в Palazzo Reale в Милане до 26 февраля.

The iconic and timeless photographs of Vincent Peters are now on display in Milan “Timeless Time” exhibition for free. Vincent Peters’ gaze is the star of an original exhibition at Palazzo Reale that runs until the next Milan Fashion Week and puts the artist’s works in a fascinating dialogue with the twelve rooms of the Appartamento dei Principi.

Культовые и неподвластные времени снимки фотографа Винсента Питерса представлены в Милане на выставке с бесплатным входом под названием «Timeless Time». Оригинальная выставка в Palazzo Reale запланирована до следующей Недели моды в Милане.

The famous faces of fashion and cinema parade in front of Peters’ lens, their beauty and charm crystallizing in each shot, not just a single image, but an entire story. Layers and fragments of reality are captured by Peters’ lens and returned to the public in black and white with a neo-realist flavor.

Перед объективом Питерса шествуют известные лица моды и кино, их красота и обаяние кристаллизуются в каждом кадре и складываются в единую цельную историю. Художник фиксирует и соединяет воедино разные фрагменты реальности и возвращает ее публике через призму своего неореалистического видения.

Monica Bellucci, Christian Bale, Vincent Cassel, Cindy Crawford, Penelope Cruz, Cameron Diaz, Scarlett Johansson, Milla Jovovich, John Malkovich, and Emma Watson are just some of the celebrities whose portraits are on display at the Royal Palace. Vincent Peters captured these images between 2001 and 2021, using impeccable lighting to elevate his subjects to a position that often transcends their celebrity status.

Oliviero Toscani: the World in 800 Photos

On the occasion of 80th birthday one of the most well-known photographers on an international level, Oliviero Toscani, the Municipality of Milan celebrates the event at Palazzo Reale, hosting the star exhibition. And I went there for the great inspiration!

По случаю 80-летия одного из самых известных фотографов международного уровня Оливъеро Тоскани муниципалитет Милана отмечает это событие в Палаццо Реале, где проходит звездная выставка. И я поехал туда за большим вдохновением!

The exhibition features 800 photographs by Toscani, including some of his iconic works as well as lesser-known works, thus telling about his career as a man with an ingenious and provocative perspective, who over decades has been influencing the habits of several generations.

На выставке представлены 800 фотографий Тоскани, в том числе некоторые из его знаковых работ, а также менее известные работы, рассказывающие о его карьере человека с гениальным и провокационным взглядом.

At the exhibition, I especially liked two installations that opened and closed the exhibition. They framed the history of the life path of a star of photography. These videos show how Oliviero Toscani photographs, how his workflow goes, where he draws inspiration and how he sees the angle.

На выставке мне особенно понравились две инсталляции, которые открывали и закрывали выставку на входе и выходе. Они как бы обрамляли историю жизненного пути метра фотографии. В этих видео рассказывается как Оливьеро Тоскани фотографирует, как проходит его рабочий процесс, где он черпает вдохновение и как он видит ракурс.

One of my fav is the picture of “Chi mi ama mi segua” for Jesus Jeans. I was also impressed by the deep undertones of his photographs in which he advocates the unity of races, in particular the photograph of the identical-looking hearts of people of different races.

Мне очень нравится его фотография «Chi mi ama mi seguа» – это была реклама джинсов Jesus. Также меня впечатлил глубокий подтекст снимков, в которых маэстро выступает за единство рас, в частности фотография сердец разных людей, которые визуально ничем не отличаются.

I also liked his sarcasm on the topic of modern relationships, where the photo shows a guy and a girl making love, but in fact everyone lives in their own devices. It is such a clear reflection of our reality.

Также мне понравился его сарказм на тему современных отношений, где на фото изображены парень и девушка, которые занимаются любовью, но на самом деле каждый живет в своих девайсах. Это такое четкое отображение нашей реальности.

And since I’m from Ukraine, I was literally knocked out by a photo with a bloody military uniform and a picture of a baby who lies in a military helmet. And the phrase with which the pictures were signed: “If there were no photographs, you would not understand at all that there is a war in the world.” Therefore, the exhibition is a reflection of the realities through the eyes of the artist.

И так как я из Украины, меня буквально отправили в нокаут эти фотографии с окровавленной военной тематикой и снимок малыша, который лежит в военной каске. И фраза, которой были подписаны снимки: «Если бы не было фотографии, вы бы вообще не понимали, что в мире есть война». Поэтому выставка – это отражение реалий глазами художника.

I advise you to buy a book with photographs of the maestro. And if you want to discuss the impressions of the exhibition with a partner in a relaxed atmosphere, you can go to the Giacomo caffè. It is located on the same floor. This is a very elegant cafe at the museum, which few people know about. A cozy atmosphere is guaranteed there.

Я бы советовала на выходе приобрести книгу с фотографиями маэстро. А если вам хочется в спокойной обстановке обсудить с партнером впечатления от выставки, можете зайти в кафе Giacomo caffè. Оно находится на том же этаже. Это очень элегантное кафе при музее, о котором мало кто знает. Там уютная атмосфера вам гарантирована.

You can visit this exhibition until the end of September. Another opportunity to see works by Toscani is the exhibition Oliviero Toscani: 80 anni da situazionista, that’s on at Palazzo Albergati in Bologna. It’s presented with over one hundred shots.

The Perfectionist: Refined Photography of Clifford Coffin

Clifford Coffin is often named the greatest of Vogue magazine’s ‘lost’ photographers – and it’s easy to see why. His career was very brief, the majority of the works were ruined in the fire in his studio, and today it’s almost impossible to find much information about him. Still, his images were, without doubt, some of the best and innovative of the 1950s.

I would call him ‘A Perfectionist’. His pictures are well-constructed to the smallest detail, and every element seems to be exactly on its place. From manicured red nails to perfectly combed hairs of a fur coat, the model looks almost artificial.

Coffin was the first to use a very special technique: he shot the pictures with ring flash, originally known for dental photography. That is how he managed to create this unnatural but captivating perfection. After him this flash was adopted by David Bailey and Helmut Newton.

Коффин был первым, кто начал использовать особую технику в фешн-фотографии: он делал снимки с кольцевой вспышкой, первоначально изобретенной для стоматологической фотографии. His career began in the post-war Britain for Vogue UK, but soon he acquired such success to be invited to shoot for American Vogue. He was famous for his terrible behaviour: “He used to throw the editors down the staircase. He was witty, bitchy and for the dull fifties shockingly so.” – said Vogue model Wilhelmina Cooper.

One of his most iconic editorials was this summer beach story for Vogue USA in 1949. The way he placed the models in bathing suits in the sand and shot them from the back was similar to a Surrealist painting. And at the same time forecasted the arrival of Pop Art aesthetics.

Одной из его самых знаковых фешн-сьемок была эта летняя пляжная история для Vogue USA в 1949 году. То, как он разместил моделей в купальных костюмах на песок и снял их со спины, было похоже на картину художников-сюрреалистов. И в тоже время предсказали приход эстетики поп-арта.

In spite of he was one of the most sought-after photographers of late 40s and 50s, Coffin had no ambition to create a ‘personal brand’ as we say it today. He did no exhibitions and never published any books or archive photographs. 

Не смотря на то, что он был одним из самых востребованных фотографов конца 40-х и 50-х годов, у Коффина не было амбиций создать «личный бренд», как мы говорим сегодня. Он не проводил выставок и никогда не публиковал ни книг, ни архивных фотографий.

When he decided that he had no interest in doing fashion photography anymore (or lost his interest for work in general, because he was a wild drinker and partying dandy), he slipped away from the business and stopped his production completely already in 1960s. Still, he left for us a real treasure – some of the most inspiring, refined and perfect images of the last century.

Когда он решил, что ему не было больше интересно заниматься фешн-фотографией (или же он потерял интерес к работе вообще, потому что был диким пьяницей и тусовщиком), он ускользнул из бизнеса и полностью прекратил сьемки уже в 1960-е годы. И все же он оставил нам настоящее сокровище — одни из самых вдохновляющих, утонченных и совершенных образов прошлого века.

Arthur Elgort: The Photographer Who Boosts My Creativity

I fell in love with Arthur Elgort’s work as soon as I saw his photography for the first time. I felt like his creative eye was so in line with mine: just look at his shooting with Kate Moss walking down the street in swimsuit back in 1995, and think about my swimwear editorial for l’Officiel Baltics at Como lake with a model catwalking the city in a bikini! I didn’t know anything about it before, but the this similarities in the vibe stunned me.

Я влюбилась в работы Артура Эльгорта с первого взгляда. Я сразу же почувствовала, что его творческий взгляд так близок моему: только посмотрите на его съемку с Кейт Мосс, идущей по улице в купальнике в 1995 году, и вспомните мой эдиториал на Комо для l’Officiel Baltics с моделью, разгуливающей по городу в бикини! Раньше я ничего не знала об этом фотографе, но такое сходство в атмосфере ошеломило меня.

I like that his photography is effortless and refined at the same time. It gives you a feeling of nonchalance while everything is perfectly orchestrated in his snaps. Like this picture of Christy Turlington speaking over the phone on the floor in a hotel, wearing an impeccable Chanel dress. I love everything about this image.

Мне нравится то, что его фотографии непринужденные и в то же время изысканные. Это дает ощущение беззаботности, в то время как в его снимках все идеально организовано. Как на этой фотографии Кристи Терлингтон, которая разговаривает по телефону на полу в отеле, одетая в безупречное платье Chanel. Мне нравится все в этом кадре.

In 80s and 90s Arthur was working with the best supermodels of the time. That’s why his shots are so great: he could obtain the coolest posing, the classiness, the perfection of a body, the attitude…. Everything contributed to a creation of a perfect snap. His favourite models were Linda Evangelista, Christy Turlington, Claudia Schiffer, Ines de la Fressange, Cindy Crawford. And they gave him the best of their personality and professionalism.

В 80-х и 90-х Артур работал с лучшими супермоделями того времени. Вот почему его снимки так хороши: он мог получать лучшие позы, совершенство тела, породу и аристократизм этих девушек … Все способствовало созданию идеального снимка. I’m hugely inspired by his spiciness and a hint of provocation. He was not interested in showing nudes, but in creating appetite. His models are not undressed, they invite you to imagine what they are hiding. Like this snap of Evangelista covering her naked body with a wide brimmed hat, or Cindy walking Paris in a dress showing her hips underneath the bows.

Меня невероятно вдохновляет пикантность и провокационность его работ. Элгорту интересно не обнаженное тело, а возбуждение аппетита. Его модели не раздеваются, они предлагают вам представить, что они скрывают. Например, эта фотография Евангелисты, прикрывающей свое обнаженное тело широкополой шляпой, или Синди, идущей по Парижу в платье, обнажающей бедра под бантами.

Also, Elgort’s sense of humour is amazing. There’s irony, playfulness, unexpected situations, crazy locations, the most inappropriate outfits that work so well in the shots.

Кроме того, у Элгорта потрясающее чувство юмора. В его кадрах всегда присутствуют ирония, игривость, неожиданные ситуации, сумасшедшие локации, самые неподходящие наряды, которые в итоге так классно смотрятся на снимках.

Arthur Elgort was born in 1940 in New York and originally studied painting. Finding this form of art too limited, he decided to try photography and soon discovered it was a talent. He debuted in British Vogue in 1971 and woke up famous, starting to collaborate with the most prestigious fashion magazines in USA and in Europe.

Артур Элгорт родился в 1940 году в Нью-Йорке и первоначально изучал живопись. Посчитав этот вид искусства слишком ограничивающим, он решил попробовать себя в фотографии и вскоре обнаружил, что это его талант. Он дебютировал в британском Vogue в 1971 году и проснулся знаменитым, начав сотрудничать с самыми престижными модными журналами США и Европы.

For over 50 years Arthur has been a major influence, from his Vogue covers to his luxury-brand ad campaigns, his work is an inspiration. His style and influence created infinite possibilities in the world of fashion photography which he continues to explore today from his base in New York City. 

Более 50 лет Артур является одним из самых влиятельных фешн-фотографов, снимая обложки Vogue и рекламные кампании люксовых брендов, которых продолжает вдохновлять его работа. Его стиль открыл безграничные возможности в мире модной фотографии, который он продолжает исследовать и сегодня в своем ателье в Нью-Йорке.

Unlock Me Down: My Fresh Editorial for L’Officiel Baltics

My fashion editorial for l’Officiel Baltics is finally out – I couldn’t wait to share this shooting with you! The story is romantic and cinematographic, as I was hugely inspired by the iconic films of Alfred Hitchcock and Micheangelo Antonioni at the moment, the Rair Window from 1954 and La Notte from 1961.

Мой свежий эдиториал для l’Officiel Baltics наконец-то опубликован: мне не терпелось поделиться с вами этой съемкой! Эта история дышит романтикой и атмосферой кино, так как я в этот период была очень вдохновлена культовыми фильмами Альфреда Хичкока и Микеланджело Антониони, «Окно во двор» 1954 года и «Ночь» из 1961-го.

There was also some cult posing on my moodboard: Antonioni’s ‘Blow Up’ with Veruschka scene inspired me for some provocative and sensual poses with the model lying and sitting on the black marble floor.

I’m in love with the interiors and ancient buildings, and this typical Milanese bourgeois apartment was an ideal location for this story. I adored the huge windows pouring down light, gorgeous stone balconies, old parquet floors and vintage velvet soft furniture.

Я влюблена в интерьеры и старинные здания, поэтому эта типичная миланская буржуазная квартира стала идеальной локацией для фешн-истории. Здесь были невероятные огромные окна, наполняющие квартиру светом, великолепные каменные балконы, старые паркетные полы и винтажная бархатная мягкая мебель.

Asian beauty is my second big obsession of the moment: I just can’t get enough of the almond eyes, porcelain skin and the grace of the movements of our model Olivia Yang. She interpreted perfectly my movie character woman.

Азиатская красота – еще одно мое помешательство: я схожу с ума от миндалевидных глаз, фарфоровой кожи и грации движений нашей модели Оливии Янг. Она прекрасно интерпретировала мою героиню кино в этой сьемке.

Fashion-wise, I focused on slightly provocative classics: feminine and sensual black dresses, timeless jumpsuits evoking 1970s style, embellished pumps, cropped blazers, tartan skirts from 1980s, retro-looking dress collars, chain necklaces that I adore to add everywhere.

Что касается стиля, я сфокусировалась на слегка провокационной классике: женственные и чувственные черные платья, вневременные комбинезоны в стиле 1970-х, декорированные стразами туфли-лодочки, укороченные блейзеры, юбки в шотландскую клетку в духе 1980-х, воротники в стиле ретро, колье-цепи, которые я обожаю добавлять повсюду.

Vacation Guru: Slim Aarons

I’m obsessed with Slim Aarons holiday photography. I even can’t really imagine why it’s my first post about it! His captures of high society life at the beach, on the boat, by the pool or in a summer villa are pure perfection and endless source of inspiration for me. This is how I see a perfect vacation. And this is where I find genius ideas for styling.

Я обожаю летние фотографии Слима Ааронса. Даже не представляю, почему это мой первый пост о его творчестве! Его снимки светской жизни на пляже, на лодке, у бассейна или на летней вилле – это чистое совершенство и бесконечный источник вдохновения для меня. Вот каким я вижу идеальный отпуск. И здесь я нахожу гениальные идеи для стайлинга.

Like this photo of Marisa Berenson lunching on Capri in 1968. Just look at how she matches the color of her swimsuit and her turban. She treated a beach dining dressing with same attention as a gala appearance, putting a dose of eyeshade for high drama and a golden bracelet to add even more chic to her look. Or this picture at an infinity pool: I would love to find a same vintage suit to pair with an elegant white straw hat.

Как эта фотография Марисы Беренсон, обедающей на Капри в 1968 году. Вы только посмотрите, как она сочетает купальник и тюрбан по цвету. Она относилась к пляжному образу с таким же вниманием, как и к торжественному выходу, добавляя тени для век для драматизма и золотой браслет для еще большего шика. Или вот этот снимок у инфинити-бассейна: мне бы очень хотелось найти такой же винтажный купальник, чтобы сочетать его с элегантной белой соломенной шляпой.

The portraits he shot in the houses of the famous socialites of the epoch are sublime. And it’s a great source for researching home decoration ideas. I’m crazy about the decoration of the wall with a collection of straw hat and bags. And this lunching scene with a view from Capri inspires me for setting up a stylish summer dinner party.

Портреты светских львиц, снятые в их летних домах, просто великолепны. И это отличный источник для поиска вдохновения по декору интерьера. Я без ума от идеи украсить стены коллекцией соломенных шляп и сумок. А эта сцена обеда с видом на острове Капри вдохновляет меня на устроить стильный летний ужин для друзей.

Aarons mixed work with pleasure, travelling the most beautiful places in the world: he toured Saint-Tropez, Monaco, Eden Roc d’Antibes, Capri, Como, Sardinia, Los Angeles, Ibiza, Cannes and alike. His approach was essential but winning:  photographing ‘attractive people who are doing attractive things in attractive places’.

Ааронc совмещал работу с удовольствием, путешествуя по самым красивым местам мира: он отдыхал и снимал в Сен-Тропе, Монако, Эдем-Рок-д’Антиб, на Капри, Комо и Сардинии, в Лос-Анджелесе, на Ибице, в Каннах и так далее. Его подход был простым, но выигрышным: фотографировать «привлекательных людей, которые делают привлекательные вещи в привлекательных местах».

The swimming suits are breathtaking. I can’t stop thinking about adding some printed ones to my wardrobe, inspired by his iconic shots. I would wear them with huge vintage clips, chain necklaces and massive bracelets, and tying a scarf around the head.

От купальников на его фото захватывает дух. Я не могу перестать думать о том, чтобы добавить несколько моделей с принтами в свой гардероб, вдохновившись его культовыми снимками. Я бы носила их с крупными винтажными клипсами, ожерельями-цепочками и массивными браслетами, и повязала бы шелковый шарф на волосы.

And as a backdrop for my future photos inspired by Aarons, I would definitely choose Capri rocs (just look at this terrace from 1980s!), a tender sandy beach of Saint-Tropez and…. a good boat, as Slim loved them so much. A great fashion crew of friends would make a perfect set for pictures.

А в качестве фона для моих будущих фотографий, вдохновленных Ааронсом, я бы определенно выбрала Капри (только взгляните на эту террасу на фото родом из 1980-х!), нежный песчаный пляж Сен-Тропе и …. хорошую лодку, какими их любил Слим. так много. Модный коллектив друзей составит лучшую компанию для идеального фото.

The Magic of Paolo Roversi’s photography

This is from the interior beauty comes out’, – says Paolo Roversi, who’s magical aesthetics enchants the fashion world for decades.

The world-famous Italian photographer was born in Ravenna in 1947, and left for Paris in 1973 by invitation of Peter Knapp, the legendary artistic director of ELLE. There he started working as a reporter for the Huppert Agency, but his interest for fashion photography made him find out the beauty of works by Richard Avedon, Irving Penn, Helmut Newton and Guy Bourdin. He became Bourdain’s assistant, and the iconic master told him to ‘never go to New York, as it was the cemetery of photographers’. In fact, Roversi has remained in Paris forever from now on, he works in his small studio in rue Paul Fort, 9.

The enchanting world of his photography owns to his experimentation with techniques. In 1980 he discovered the 20 x 25 Polaroid film to be used on a large format optical bench, becoming the first photographer to try this method As he states it, «this technique reveals to the photographer new horizons of aesthetic research and gives new life to his relationship with the photographed subject». Polaroid makes the colors of the photos unreal, creating an atmosphere stylistically suspended between real and unreal.

In 2020 Roversi signed a contract for the cult Pirelli calendar, photographing some of the most strong and individualist female celebrities. He captured Emma Watson, Kristen Stewart, Mia Goth, Rosalia and many others. These actresses, artists and singers interpreted the modern Shakespeare’s Juliet in front of his wonder camera.

Provocative Worlds of Chris von Wangenheim

If you miss the wild mood of 70s and 80s parties like the ones at Studio54 in New York where Bianca Jagger entered on a horse, Chris von Wangenheim is definitely your piece of cake. Courageous, talented, erotically provocative, he shot some of the best (and scandalous) images of the epoch.

Chris was German, born un 1942 at war-time Berlin. He started from studying a bit of architecture, but already at 23 he decided to follow his interest in photography and moved to New York in 1965. He opened his own studio there just in a year.

One of his favourite models of those times was the famous and damned Gia Carangi, first shot by him in 1978.

Photography as an art form by Edward Steichen

“The mission of photography is to explain man to man and each to himself,” Edward Steichen theorized.

He attempt and ultimate success to gain recognition for photography as an art form. In 1911 Steichen shot the latest collection of couturier Poiret for teh magazine Art et Decoration, which is now generally regarded as the 1st ever fashion shoot.

 During the First World War, Steichen was posted to Europe to run the aerial photography division of the American Expeditionary Force, and he remained there until 1919. The clarity of the aerial photographs convinced Steichen to change his style and embrace the clear, sharp images that cameras could make.

He abandoned the soft-focus and heavy retouching of his earlier work. In 1923, Steichen received his first major break as a photographer, when he became chief photographer for Condé Nast Publications.

For the next fifteen years he took fashion photographs for Vogue and portraits for Vanity Fair, becoming hugely influential in both fields. His portraits of Gloria Swanson (1924) and Greta Garbo (1928), for example, have become icons in the history of photography.
