There are places you visit once and remember forever — and then there’s Positano, which doesn’t just linger in your memory, it dances there. We went in mid-July, right in the middle of Italy’s sun-drenched high season, to celebrate a special double birthday: my boyfriend and his best friend happen to share the same birth date. It felt like the perfect excuse to escape Milan’s city pace and plunge into cliffside glamour, lemon-scented air, and long days that stretch into Champagne-soaked nights.

We chose to fly from Milan to Naples. It’s only 1.5 hours in the air, but between airport security, taxi lines, and baggage reclaim, we couldn’t help but think — next time, we’re taking the train. Italy’s fast trains glide from Milan to Naples in just over 4 hours. They’re quiet, spacious, and you can sip a coffee while watching the countryside unfurl outside your window. From Naples, we booked a private car transfer along the famously scenic drive to Positano — and let me tell you, the moment those colorful houses peeked into view, we knew we were in for something special.

The town was absolutely alive — and not just because of summer. Ferrari had just launched its new “Amalfi” model, and the coast was buzzing with events. The streets were filled with visitors, vintage cars, photographers, and that electric energy you only get when something iconic is happening. Despite the crowd, it still felt magical — the kind of chaos you secretly want on vacation, as long as your wine is chilled and your room has a view.

Tucked high above the coast, we stayed at Villa Mary, a gem of a boutique villa with wraparound sea views, tiled floors, and that rarest of Italian luxuries: breakfast served directly to your room. Each morning, we’d wake to the sound of church bells and find a tray of fresh pastries, fruits, eggs, and strong espresso waiting on our private terrace. It’s not something most Italian hotels do, but at Villa Mary, it’s simply how they welcome you. Just when we thought it couldn’t get better, a poolside server brought out icy sorbetto al limone as a welcome treat. Cool, fragrant, and perfectly tart — in the land of lemons, what better way to begin?

One afternoon we headed with our friends small boat to Conca del Sogno, a secluded cove near Nerano. We thought we were just going for lunch. Instead, we found ourselves at a spontaneous sea party: lobster linguini and grilled fish served tableside, Champagne flowing freely, a live saxophonist moving between the tables like something out of a movie. Then came the highlight: sorbetto al limone, but spiked with vodka and mixed with Prosecco right on the table. The sun, the laughter, the views — it was one of those moments that turns into a favorite story before the day is even over.

Getting around is easy here. Ferries run from Positano to Amalfi in about 20 minutes, and you can reach Ravello in just under 30 min. Amalfi’s main piazza and cathedral are charming, but Ravello… Ravello felt like stepping into another world.

We visited the legendary Belmond Hotel Caruso, carved into the cliffs with an infinity pool that stretches into the clouds. Between the rose-filled gardens, panoramic views, and the scent of lemon trees in the air, it’s a place that makes you wonder if you’re dreaming. A destination wedding was being set up while we were there — white flowers, golden light, and the distant echo of a harp. If romance has a home, it’s here.

Our final dinner was at Don Giovanni, tucked into Positano’s old town. The staff treated us like family, recommending wines and laughing with us as if we’d known each other for years. We ordered the caprese, and I still dream of it: fresh buffalo mozzarella, sun-kissed tomatoes, olive oil, and just a pinch of sea salt. I don’t think I’ll ever eat one that good again…
