There’s no better place for a day off than Como Lake. I take a fast train from Milan every time I need a pause from bustling rhythm of my life in the megapolis. Just half an hour of travel, and the scenery changes completely. You’re suddenly surrounded by calm waters, high mountains and green trees. A paradise!

This time I chose Villa d’Este as the main destination. The architecture and the immense park (an impressive 25-acre of lush green plants) still preserve the original Renaissance traits. The villa was built in sixteenth century by then-famous architect Pellegrino Pellegrini ‘Il Tibaldi’, and straight after it was completed the place became the favorite meeting point for politicians and intellectuals.

Not much has changed in the course of history. The Villa was converted into a luxury hotel for the nobility and the high bourgeoisie in 1873. It was visited by aristocracy, movie stars, fashion designers… As one of them, Bill Blass, once said: ‘There is no doubt about it, the wonderful ambience of Villa d’Este makes it the number one place to visit for a most fashionable clientele’.

I made a stop here to enjoy some typical Italian snacks as fritto misto, fried seafood, and an octopus salad, cooked in exquisite contemporary way. Why not treat yourself to a day that makes you feel as a part of European aristocracy who spend their holidays here?

Grand Hotel Tremezzo is an other luxury destination that is definitely worth visiting for a a light gourmet lunch in the most beautiful surroundings. It’s an iconic art nouveau masterpiece sitting on the western shores of Lake Como.
