Villas, Lobster & Boats – perfect escape in the Gulf islands

I went to the Gulf islands without a grand plan — just a suitcase, a playlist, and a soft idea that “island time” would sort the rest out. What surprised me most was discovering that August (yes, August) can be one of the most comfortable months to visit Gulf islands: warm, beach-friendly days and — for us — quiet, almost private stretches of sand. The weather in Ko Samui in August tends to be warm with pleasant highs around the high 20s–low 30s °C, which made long beach afternoons totally doable. Here’s how the trip unfolded — hotels I adored, meals I still dream about, and the easy packing rules I’m sworn to after days spent barefoot.

Погода на Ко Самуи в августе оказалась тёплой, с приятными дневными температурами, что делало долгие пляжные вечера очень приятными. Ниже — как прошла поездка: мои любимые отели, блюда, о которых я до сих пор мечтаю, и правила сборки чемодана, которые я безгранично советую после дней проведённых босиком.

Koh Samui felt like the softest start: reserved beaches, warm water, and not a crowd in sight. My absolute favorite hideaway was Vana Belle — their pool villas are the kind of rooms that make you forget you ever had a to-do list. Private pools, attentive, tailor-made guest care and an honest sense of calm that’s rare even on postcard-perfect islands. It’s the kind of place that reads like luxury but feels like someone carefully arranged serenity just for you.

On the other end of the spectrum — but still a gem — we found a more budget-friendly option: Chaweng Paradise (our villa felt like a small treasure with sea views mere steps away). For those who want sea-on-the-doorstep without the ultra-luxe price tag, this was a smart pick: a villa with a terrace facing the water and that rare island privacy.

  • Sabienglae — fresh lobster done right; island seafood is a reason to travel in itself.
  • Phensiri — authentic Samui recipes, many of them centuries old, prepared with pride.

Koh Phangan surprised me with how easy it is to escape the headline-Full-Moon scene. We stayed at Santhiya (Santhiya Koh Phangan Resort & Spa) — a dream of teak, bamboo and private corners. One practical luxury that mattered most: the hotel’s private speedboat transfer. Walking off the dock at the hotel rather than being herded with crowds made all the difference. If you, like me, value calm arrivals and departures, that private transfer felt indulgent and utterly worth it.

There’s a little magic here called the bamboo wonderland — perfect for wandering, reading in the rain, and feeling like the world has slowed to a whisper. For dinners, we became regulars at 55 Beach Restaurant — toes in sand, a grill that won us over every night, and simple live music that made everything feel celebratory.

A delicious surprise: Anantara’s Yukinoya sushi on Phangan was as good as any I’ve had in Japan — delicate, precise, and somehow completely at home on an island. If you love sushi, don’t skip it.

Packing — the best travel styling tip you’ll get from me

This trip kicked any “what should I wear” anxiety out of my suitcase. You don’t need the wardrobe of a metropolis here. My uniform for nearly the entire stay: flip-flops (or barefoot), bikini, pareo, a light linen shirt, and whichever dress I would wear most at home. Pack light. Pack favorites. The islands reward you for the simplicity.

  • Go in the shoulder/low season if you can — you might find the beaches almost to yourself. (We did.)
  • Book at least one hotel with a private transfer if you value calm arrivals (Santhiya’s private boat is a lovely example)
  • Eat where the locals and hotel staff point you — the best dishes are rarely on the glossy top-10 lists.

August in Thailand taught me that island travel doesn’t always mean blistering crowds and bad weather. For us it was warm sea days, empty beaches, and more attention to made-to-measure service than I’d expected. Between Vana Belle’s pool villas, our little sea-view Chaweng villa, the cliffside calm of Santhiya and surprise-sushi at Anantara — this trip was an ode to slow luxury and delicious discoveries. If you want a trip that’s about gentle mornings, barefoot afternoons and meals you’ll dream about, put these islands on your list — and pack light.

Lost in Paradise : my wild and raw Sumba Island adventure

You know those trips you dream about—the ones with turquoise waters, wild horses galloping along the shore, and lazy afternoons spent swimming under waterfalls? Well, Sumba was supposed to be that trip.
Spoiler alert: it was… kind of. But also the wildest and most unexpected travel experience of my life. We landed on Sumba with stars in our eyes and zero bars on our phones. At the tiny airport, not a single soul spoke English, and little kids stared at me like I’d just stepped off a spaceship (note to self: blonde hair and blue eyes are a rare sight here).

Спойлер: отчасти так и было… но в итоге это оказалось самым диким и непредсказуемым приключением в моей жизни.Мы приземлились на Сумбе с горящими глазами и нулем сигнала на телефоне. В крошечном аэропорту никто не говорил по-английски, а местные детишки смотрели на меня так, будто я прилетела с другой планеты (ну да, блондинка с голубыми глазами здесь редкость).


No driver in sight either. We’d booked a pickup weeks ago, but apparently, time in Sumba runs on “we’ll see” mode. Eventually, someone arrived, smiling warmly but speaking no English. The ride to our hotel was two hours of silent guessing games—“Are we going the right way? Is this even our driver?” A true test of faith and Google Translate that refused to work offline.

When we finally reached Lelewatu Resort, it felt like paradise… and a tiny bit like house arrest. The villas perch dramatically on a cliff overlooking the Indian Ocean—drop-dead gorgeous, yes—but here’s the thing: no taxis, no other restaurants, nowhere to go except your villa. You’re isolated, for better or worse.

And then came the waves. I love falling asleep to ocean sounds as much as the next person, but this wasn’t a lullaby. It was a full-on ocean rock concert. Imagine trying to sleep while a giant drum set is crashing under your bed. Surfers might have loved it. Me? I fantasized about noise-cancelling earplugs all night.

А ночью – пришли волны. Я люблю засыпать под шум моря, но здесь это был не шум, а натуральный рок-концерт океана. Казалось, что волны гремят прямо под кроватью. Серферы, наверное, кайфуют от такого. Я же засыпала с мечтой о наушниках с шумоподавлением.

Swimming? Forget it. The waves were so intense we couldn’t safely get in the water once during our five-day stay. A beach holiday where you can’t actually swim? Yep, that happened.

Купание? Забудьте. Волны такие сильные, что зайти в воду было небезопасно. Пять дней на острове – и ни одного нормального плавания. Пляжный отдых без купания – вот уж ирония судьбы.

One of Sumba’s most iconic experiences is swimming with wild horses. I had visions of majestic creatures galloping beside me through the surf, movie-scene style. Reality check? The horses are tiny—adorable, yes, but more pony than stallion. We splashed around and laughed at how Instagram had made them look like something out of a fantasy film. Still, it’s a memory I won’t forget.

Реальность оказалась милее, но смешнее – лошади здесь маленькие, больше похожие на пони. Мы плескались вместе, смеялись и понимали, что Instagram явно немного преувеличил масштабы этого “дикого” опыта. Но момент все равно незабываемый.

Sumba has raw beauty you can’t deny. If you go, here’s what’s worth your time:

Watu Bella Beach – An untouched, powdery-white stretch of heaven where you might be the only soul around.

Mandorak Beach – Calm, postcard-perfect, and finally a place where you can dip your toes without a tsunami sweeping you away.

Waterfalls – Tanggedu and Lapopu are magical (go in dry season for their full beauty).

Makan Dulu Restaurant – The only spot we found with English-speaking staff and an actual menu you can read. Trust me, after days of pointing and guessing, this feels like Michelin-star service.

If you’re after polished luxury and convenience, Sumba might not be your match—unless you splurge on NIHI Sumba, the island’s famed 5-star resort where things seem a little smoother. But if you crave wild, unpredictable adventures, where nature is still untamed and nothing runs on schedule, Sumba will give you exactly that.

Если вы ищете отшлифованную роскошь и удобства – возможно, Сумба не ваш вариант (если только не выбрать легендарный отель NIHI Sumba, где, судя по отзывам, все намного организованнее). Но если вам хочется настоящего, дикого приключения, без глянца и фильтров, где природа первобытна, а жизнь идет без расписания – Сумба подарит именно это.

Lemon Sorbetto, Sunset Swims & Birthday Magic: Our Stylish Escape to Positano

There are places you visit once and remember forever — and then there’s Positano, which doesn’t just linger in your memory, it dances there. We went in mid-July, right in the middle of Italy’s sun-drenched high season, to celebrate a special double birthday: my boyfriend and his best friend happen to share the same birth date. It felt like the perfect excuse to escape Milan’s city pace and plunge into cliffside glamour, lemon-scented air, and long days that stretch into Champagne-soaked nights.

We chose to fly from Milan to Naples. It’s only 1.5 hours in the air, but between airport security, taxi lines, and baggage reclaim, we couldn’t help but think — next time, we’re taking the train. Italy’s fast trains glide from Milan to Naples in just over 4 hours. They’re quiet, spacious, and you can sip a coffee while watching the countryside unfurl outside your window. From Naples, we booked a private car transfer along the famously scenic drive to Positano — and let me tell you, the moment those colorful houses peeked into view, we knew we were in for something special.

Мы выбрали перелёт из Милана в Неаполь — всего полтора часа в воздухе. Но, если честно, после ожиданий в аэропорту, контроля и очередей за багажом мы подумали: в следующий раз — точно поезд. Итальянские скоростные поезда домчат из Милана в Неаполь за чуть больше 4 часов, с комфортом, Wi‑Fi, эспрессо и видом на поля и виноградники.
Из Неаполя мы заказали трансфер с водителем до Позитано. Дорога вдоль побережья — это уже путешествие само по себе: горы, серпантины, деревья в оливковом серебре, и вдруг — открывается он, Позитано, каскадом разноцветных домиков, будто нарисованных акварелью.

The town was absolutely alive — and not just because of summer. Ferrari had just launched its new “Amalfi” model, and the coast was buzzing with events. The streets were filled with visitors, vintage cars, photographers, and that electric energy you only get when something iconic is happening. Despite the crowd, it still felt magical — the kind of chaos you secretly want on vacation, as long as your wine is chilled and your room has a view.

Tucked high above the coast, we stayed at Villa Mary, a gem of a boutique villa with wraparound sea views, tiled floors, and that rarest of Italian luxuries: breakfast served directly to your room. Each morning, we’d wake to the sound of church bells and find a tray of fresh pastries, fruits, eggs, and strong espresso waiting on our private terrace. It’s not something most Italian hotels do, but at Villa Mary, it’s simply how they welcome you. Just when we thought it couldn’t get better, a poolside server brought out icy sorbetto al limone as a welcome treat. Cool, fragrant, and perfectly tart — in the land of lemons, what better way to begin?

One afternoon we headed with our friends small boat to Conca del Sogno, a secluded cove near Nerano. We thought we were just going for lunch. Instead, we found ourselves at a spontaneous sea party: lobster linguini and grilled fish served tableside, Champagne flowing freely, a live saxophonist moving between the tables like something out of a movie. Then came the highlight: sorbetto al limone, but spiked with vodka and mixed with Prosecco right on the table. The sun, the laughter, the views — it was one of those moments that turns into a favorite story before the day is even over.

Getting around is easy here. Ferries run from Positano to Amalfi in about 20 minutes, and you can reach Ravello in just under 30 min. Amalfi’s main piazza and cathedral are charming, but Ravello… Ravello felt like stepping into another world.

We visited the legendary Belmond Hotel Caruso, carved into the cliffs with an infinity pool that stretches into the clouds. Between the rose-filled gardens, panoramic views, and the scent of lemon trees in the air, it’s a place that makes you wonder if you’re dreaming. A destination wedding was being set up while we were there — white flowers, golden light, and the distant echo of a harp. If romance has a home, it’s here.

Our final dinner was at Don Giovanni, tucked into Positano’s old town. The staff treated us like family, recommending wines and laughing with us as if we’d known each other for years. We ordered the caprese, and I still dream of it: fresh buffalo mozzarella, sun-kissed tomatoes, olive oil, and just a pinch of sea salt. I don’t think I’ll ever eat one that good again…

#Escape: Walking Cloudy Milan in My Style Story for ISSUE №25

In times when we can’t really escape anywhere, my fashion story named ‘Escape’ for Archive Magazine is finally out! It was shot in my beloved Milan some months ago by a talented photographer Andrea Squeo, and I was honored to play the roles of both the stylist and the model.

As the theme for this fashion story I chose 1980s with its passion for lush volumes, oversize cuts, net stockings, provocative leopard and bourgeois tweed jackets. Mix of textures was the key to the aesthetics of that epoch. I’ve paired red ilk and rough leather, animal print pony hair and nylon, Vichy check and rhinestones, vinyl and panno casentino wool.

Микс текстур – ключ к тому, чтобы показать эстетику той эпохи. Поэтому я соединила в образах алый шелк и грубую кожу с золотыми пуговицами, мех пони с анималистичным принтом и нейлон, клетку Виши и сверкающие камни, винил и традиционную итальянскую шерсть панно казентино.

White trousers (int this case, with a trendy cutout of the hem) have always been my choice for cloudy and dull weather: what can lift up your mood better than a touch of pure light colors? Only a seductive pair of red shoes with sparkling stones!

Белые брюки (в этом случае с трендовым разрезом в области подола) – мой выбор для мрачной облачной погоды. Что может лучше поднять настроение, чем чистые светлые оттенки? Только пара соблазнительных туфель цвета красного вина со сверкающими камнями!

Don’t be afraid of mixing prints and textures as you feel it. This is how they were doing ir back in 80’s, and this approach is back in fashion once again. I love the play of wide check of the jacket, leopardy wool of the coat and polka dot low-heel pumps. It’s extremely chic!

Не бойтесь смешивать принты и текстуры так, как вам нравится: именно так поступали иконы стиля 80-х, и такой подход снова в моде! Мне нравится миксовать клетку жакета, леопардовую шерсть пальто и мелкий горох лодочек на низком каблуке.

The cape is officially my favorite outerwear for the next fall. It has vintage feel about it, in a city as chic as Milan it’s not considered too much to wear it on weekdays with knee-high boots and a hat inspired by the 70s. I would add a white bag as a trendy contemporary detail.

Это официально: кейп – мой любимый вид верней одежды для будущей осени. Тем более, что в таком роскошном городе. как Милан, не считается зазорным носить его в будние дни в компании высоких сапог до колена и шляпы по моде 70-х. Я буду обязательно добавлять к нему белую сумку в качестве трендовой детали.

You take yourself with you wherever you go, so running off to a new place is no way to escape. You’ll just end up replicating the same patterns that got you where you are in the first place. But if you work on changing habits that don’t serve you, and replacing them with ones that do you’ll notice that you no longer feel like you have to escape from the situation, and can feel more comfortable in your surroundings. You can still use a change of scenery to help uproot you from your rut and make lasting changes.
