Paolo Roversi, ‘Birds’

‘My photography is more subtraction than addition. I always try to take off things. We all have a sort of mask of expression. I try to take all these masks away and little by little subtract until you have something pure left. A kind of abandon, a kind of absence. This is from the interior beauty comes out’, – says Paolo Roversi, who’s magical aesthetics enchants the fashion world for decades.

The world-famous Italian photographer was born in Ravenna in 1947, and left for Paris in 1973 by invitation of Peter Knapp, the legendary artistic director of ELLE. There he started working as a reporter for the Huppert Agency, but his interest for fashion photography made him find out the beauty of works by Richard Avedon, Irving Penn, Helmut Newton and Guy Bourdin. He became Bourdain’s assistant, and the iconic master told him to ‘never go to New York, as it was the cemetery of photographers’. In fact, Roversi has remained in Paris forever from now on, he works in his small studio in rue Paul Fort, 9.

The enchanting world of his photography owns to his experimentation with techniques. In 1980 he discovered the 20 x 25 Polaroid film to be used on a large format optical bench, becoming the first photographer to try this method As he states it, «this technique reveals to the photographer new horizons of aesthetic research and gives new life to his relationship with the photographed subject». Polaroid makes the colors of the photos unreal, creating an atmosphere stylistically suspended between real and unreal.

Starting from the 1980s he works with the famous fashion brands which are searching for photographers who know how to recreate emotions and personal world in an image. He collaborates with Comme des Garçons, Yohji Yamamoto, Romeo Gigli, Giorgio Armani, Valentino, Krizia, Cerruti, Romeo Gigli, Dior, Yves Saint Laurent, Alberta Ferretti, Hermes, Pomellato, Givenchy, Guerlain, Bisazza, Hermès and many others. He shoots for Vogue (working particularly a lot for Vogue Italia), Elle, Marie Claire, Harper’s Bazaar to name a few.

In 2020 Roversi signed a contract for the cult Pirelli calendar, photographing some of the most strong and individualist female celebrities. He captured Emma Watson, Kristen Stewart, Mia Goth, Rosalia and many others. These actresses, artists and singers interpreted the modern Shakespeare’s Juliet in front of his wonder camera.

One of his most beautiful photographic books is ‘Dior Images’, commissioned by Vogue Australia and published by the prestigious house of Rizzoli. He captured some of the most iconic looks created by the French fashion house of all epochs.

Best known for his nude spreads in Vogue and Harper’s Bazaar, Sorrenti was born in hot Naples and bred in New York. Working as a model in his youth, he shot to fame as a photographer in 1993 at the age of 21 with pictures of his then-girlfriend Kate Moss for the Calvin Klein Obsession perfume campaign.

The self-taught photographer has since produced ad campaigns for leading luxury brands from Yves Saint Laurent to Prada.

And recently published a book with dozen of unseen pictures of Kate. They say that intimacy was vital ingredient of his work which gives a space to emotions and makes shots so special.

Mario Sorrenti’s works were exhibited at London (Victoria and Albert Museum), Paris, Monaco and New York (New York’s Museum of Modern Art).

Also Sorrenti worked on Pirelli Calendar in 2012, which is my favourite calendar ever.
