Belichick strips success down to its essentials: talent is secondary. What counts most is being reliable, steady, and humble enough to learn and grow. It matters because talent fades without discipline. Dependability builds trust, consistency creates momentum, and a willingness to improve makes greatness possible for anyone willing to work for it.
Here’s the best way to sum up the act of procrastination. Be wise and just do what needs to be done at the time it needs to be done. It is rather foolish to push things back that must be done if they’re eventually going to need to get done at some point. When you do the work in a timely manner you free yourself up to do more and achieve more, rather than struggle with easy tasks that should have been done long ago. When you put off what needs to be done you are putting off your success and plenty of opportunities to accomplish and become even more.
The chances are, the biggest reason you are dragging your feet is because the chips are stacked against you. Your future is more important than the difficulty of getting done. Think about where you will be in a month. In six months. In a year. Now do it.
Some of your goals are small. For example, your first goal should be, “Get Off My Ass.” You can get that one checked off today. When you get to the end of that goal, it’s the starting point for the next goal on your list.
It can be so hard to take that first step when the rest of the journey is unclear, or even totally unknown. But that is what life is like, each step we take is really a step of faith because we never know what’s ahead, we just have to carry on and deal with what happens next to the best of our abilities. Here Dr. King reminds us that we’ll never be able to see the whole staircase, no matter if it’s an important project, a relationship, or the totality of our lives. It matters not, because as long as you have faith in that first step, the next will appear.
It does take courage to make a stand and go up against your enemies, but what happens when it’s your friends that you have to stand up to? This is when it becomes very hard indeed to go against the grain and stand up for what you believe is right. So many times young women are lured into what their group of friends is saying or doing, even when they know it’s not right. It may end up that you’re not friends with those people anymore, but you’ll make new friends that share your values.
When we lose motivation, we start to look at the clock. Whether it’s on a daily basis or a yearly basis, we get lost in what we’re not doing. Instead, keep going. Focus on right now. Get things done today… right now.
You dream big. Some people say too big. But that’s those people. That’s their limitations. Don’t let their limitations hold you back from what you can accomplish. Today is the day to take action.
There might be someone out there who is more talented than you. Maybe they have more natural ability. Maybe they have more resources. The truth is, when you start working toward your goal, you’ll be stronger because you had to overcome those limitations.
When we are chasing success, we will obviously run into many failures. Most of them are brief. What would the world be if the sun never set? If we never had darkness, we could not fully appreciate the light.
