Brian Duffy – The Man Who Shot The Sixties

Brian Duffy was an English photographer and film producer, best remembered for his fashion photography of the 1960s and 1970s, iconic Vidal Sassoon takes of hairstyle model Frankie Stein amongst many others, and his creation of the iconic “Aladdin Sane” image for David Bowie.

Brian Duffy was born in Irish family in London. In 1950s he started studying painting in St Martins School of Art, but soon switched over by other speciality- he was interested in design of clothes. Reason – ” great number of  nice girls around are engaged in the same business”. In 1954 he was invited to work in Balenciaga fashion house , but  Brian refused, preferred to work as artist-freelancer in Harpers Bazaar.

In 1957 he began work at British Vogue only leaving in 1963 to work from his studio. Among the many famous faces who sat for Duffy were Jean Shrimpton, Nina Simone, Brigitte Bardot, John Lennon, Michael Caine and Sammy Davis Jr. Duffy also dabbled with advertising and shot award-winning campaigns for Benson & Hedges cigarettes and Smirnoff Vodka.

“The thing about the photograph is that theres’s no smell and in a sense it tells the truth and yet it is a lie”

Duffy was known for his difficult character. Even it would be possible to call him undoubtedly “bad”,  considering this incident after which Duffy threw away photography. In 1979 he was nearly to burn all archival negatives when understood that stopped being the artist.

Harper’s Bazaar.

Try not. Do, or do not. There is no try.” ~Yoda

Yoda dropped one of his most famous phrases on Luke when Luke said he would try to move the sunken ship. He pointed out a very true statement. You either accomplish what you set out to do, or you don’t, there is no in between, no grey area called try. Choose to do that one thing that you’ve been “trying to do but have yet to succeed at. Feel that satisfaction that comes with knowing that you did, and that you didn’t just try, or you didn’t do not. You must unlearn what you have learned.

Terence Donovan game changing photograph

Terence Donovan was generous and gentle; he was also a very wise man.

He was a key part of that English movement in fashion photography in the 1960s and, together with Bailey and Duffy, a photographer one simply had to work with if one’s career were to mean anything. He represented everything that was changing in the world of fashion; his eye was altering the way the world perceived women.

With the help of Donovan’s gritty photographs, the world started to look to London for inspiration, and the whole youth quake was born. Vidal Sassoon was combing out those beehives, giving hair a cut and a freedom it had not experienced in many years; Mary Quant was snipping off skirts into minis that were barely respectable. Donovan was recording all of this, taking us out of frosty locations such as Belgravia to the streets of his youth in the East End.

kingdom of freedom

Image
On the border of the country where i was going was the men checking the documents and visas. He asks me intelligently couple of questions and then ask me to wait. Minutes was passing very slowly i was hearing my heart bit and every breath i took.  Why i was worry so much? Guess its a question of freedom action and possibilities .
It was in London airport – the timeless kingdom state. From there was going many trains cars and many different people from all the world. When i got to down town, all was inspiring in a geometric progression: new country, new city, new culture, architecture, people…. and me … pretty good known. The air was sweet and fresh and the lights which were prepared for the celebration time was bringing me in fairy tale. Probably i felt myself like an in dream home town. New for me and full of strangers. From that moment i start  acquaintance with new side of me. Its marvellous what do this new things and events in a life! Seems like a newborn baby start to discover the world from a new list of paper.
People i meet, places i visit , style of people on the streets, different languages, shopping sales rush all was completed with amazing contrast of calm silence and elegance of architecture. The only thing that was annoying  – eternal raining. All this together was giving me a spirit of freedom and choice of possibilities. After realising this i was asking myself a question: why i was feeling like this exactly here?
Guess coz people are equal, its hard to find difference in classes so on. In my home town, country its completely other story… so many pour citizen living and working in a country which stealing money from its budget. Deep inside i wish to change reality of Ukraine for a better standards. Freedom to talk, to choose, to live, to earn, to create and to develop.
